“It hurts me more than you,” and “This is for your own good.” These are the statements my mother sued to make years ago when I had to earn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.

That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The school and the educators made it easy on us. They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators (计算器), turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation.

Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at theirown pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Klompus who says of her students “so paasive”—and wonders what happened. Nothing was demanded of them, she believes. Television, says Klompus, contributes to children’s passivity. “We’re not training kids to work any more,” says Klompus, “We’re talking about a generation of kids who’ve never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them. Instead of saying ‘go look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”

Yes, it does. It takes energy and it takes work. it’s time for parents to ed their vacation and come back to work it’s time to take the car away, to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’s for their own good. It’s time to start telling them no again.

( ) 44. What can you conclude sbout the passage?_________.

A. children should do what they wish to B. Parents should behave themselves well

C. it’s time for parents to be more strict with their children

D. children should take part in more activities at school

In the western countries, especially in America, some social customs have lasted today. For example, Ladies First, that is to say, women in theses countries are respected in many ways.

In the U.S.A as in Europe, you will see men usually open doors for women, and women generally walk ahead of men into a room or a restaurant, unless the men have to be ahead of the ladies to choose the table, to open the door of a car or to give other services. On the street, men almost always walk or cross the street on the side of the ladies which is closer to the traffic. But if a man walks wit two ladies, he sould walk between them.

If the host or hostess comes to fetch their guest for dinner in a car, the guest should squeeze into and sit at the front seat and leave the back seat free, as the host or hostess is also the driver. When the host shows the guest to the sitting room, most men in the room will stand up if the guest is a lady. Usually a man is introduced to a woman first, unless he is much older and senior. Generally speaking, younger ones are introduced to older ones first. The ladies in the sitting room will not stand up whether the new comer is a man or a woman. Though the custom is followed by fewer people than in the past, especially among the younger generation, women of all ages still want to keep the custom. Anyhow, women are still respected in any ways in the western countries.
